Start with a city

A location is a starting point. A result depends on the homes you compare and the assumptions you choose.

Three questions a useful comparison should answer

01

Can I afford the monthly budget?

Compare rent with the full ownership cost: mortgage, taxes, insurance, HOA dues, maintenance and utilities.

02

What cash is tied up?

Count the down payment and closing costs. Keep moving costs and an emergency reserve separate from cash at closing.

03

What if my plans change?

Compare an early move with a longer stay. Home value growth, investment returns and selling costs can change which path finishes ahead.

A price-to-rent ratio is home price ÷ (monthly rent × 12). It compares the price of buying with annual rent, but leaves out financing, ownership costs and investment returns. It cannot establish a break-even year on its own.

Browse cities by state

Each state page lists all its covered cities. City pages may share county or metro reference values; they are not independent city-level observations.
