Dallas Housing Authority (DHA Housing Solutions for North Texas) was accepting Housing Choice Voucher (Section 8) applications when we checked its website on September 19, 2026. An application puts your name on a waiting list. It is not a voucher, and the wait after you apply is often long.

The details
Takes Housing Choice Voucher pre-applications online on a rolling basis (continuous enrollment). An application stays on the list until you are selected, or for up to 18 months, after which you can apply again. Being on the list is not a voucher; waits are long.
We checked this on September 19, 2026 against the authority's own page. Housing authorities open and close lists with little notice, so read that page yourself before you rely on this.

How to apply
- Where: the official application page. Apply only through the housing authority itself.
- Questions: call 214-951-8300.
- Cost: free. Anyone charging a fee to apply, to hold a place in line or to "guarantee" a voucher is not the housing authority.
Save your confirmation number. If you move or change your phone number while you wait, update the authority, because people it cannot reach lose their place.

We track 4 Housing Choice Voucher waiting lists in the Dallas, TX area. When we checked in September 2026: 1 open, 3 closed. Every list we track there, with phone numbers and status, is on the Dallas, TX Section 8 page.
Who can apply
Housing authorities take applications from people who live outside their area. The trade-off: an applicant who lived elsewhere when applying can be required to lease in the authority's area for the first 12 months (24 CFR 982.353), and local residents often get a preference.
Income limits and what a voucher pays depend on the county. See Section 8 in Dallas, TX for the rent figures in this area.

If the list closes before you apply
A list that is open today can close next week. If this one has closed by the time you read this, three things still work.
First, check which Section 8 waiting lists are open now: we recheck every list we track and date each entry. Second, sign up for the waiting list alert on the Dallas, TX page, and we will email you when a list in the area opens. Third, apply to more than one authority. Being on several lists improves your odds, and nothing limits how many you can join.

It depends on who is applying. A student living with parents who have a voucher is simply a household member. A college student applying on their own is barred if they are under 24, unmarried, not a veteran, have no children and are not disabled, unless both they and their parents are income-eligible. Here is the rule, the exceptions, how student aid is counted, and what housing authorities ask for.
