Boone County, KY Section 8 Waiting List Open (October 2026)

Quick answerThe Boone County Assisted Housing Department in Burlington, Kentucky was taking Section 8 (Housing Choice Voucher) applications on October 8, 2026. Its application page read "Boone County Housing Waiting List: Open". The opening is limited: the county lists four groups it accepts, and every applicant must live, work or attend school full-time in Boone County. Applying is free and online. An application is a place on a list, and a voucher comes later.

What Boone County Assisted Housing Department says
Boone County Assisted Housing showed its voucher list as open on October 8, 2026, for a limited set of applicants. The county's application page reads "Boone County Housing Waiting List: Open" above a "Start Application" button.
The limit is on a second page. Who Qualifies for Assistance says the department is "accepting applications for" the four groups below, and ends: "All other categories are closed at this time."
- Families with dependentsthe first group on the county's list.
- Single pregnant women"ages 18 or older".
- People on disability"Individuals receiving social security disability".
- People over 50"Individuals over age 50".
- Everyone, in addition"All individuals must live, work or attend school full-time in Boone County."
What it means: a single adult under 50 with no dependents and no disability benefit is not in any open group, and neither is a household with no tie to Boone County.

Key pointBoone County is in Kentucky, across the Ohio River from Cincinnati, and keeps its own list. The office is at 2950 Washington Street, 3rd Floor, Burlington, KY 41005. At least one national listing site showed this list as closed on October 8, 2026 while the county's own page said Open, so call 859-334-2105 to confirm before relying on either.
How to apply
Apply only through the county's online application at apps.boonecountyky.org/apply, which costs nothing.
- 1Check the open groupsconfirm on the Who Qualifies page that the household fits one of the four groups and the Boone County tie.
- 2Open the application pageit should read "Boone County Housing Waiting List: Open". Click "Start Application".
- 3Fill in every sectionthe county's FAQ says to "complete all sections of the application" and that documents supporting it will be required.
- 4Wait for the emailthe FAQ promises "an email confirmation once your application has been correctly submitted". Check spam and junk folders.
- 5Keep the confirmationsave the email and note the date applied.
What it means: no confirmation email means the application may not have gone through, so call 859-334-2105. VoucherMatch did not open the form beyond its first page, so the exact questions are not listed here.

Watch outThe county runs two web addresses that look alike. The portal at apps.boonecountyky.org, without "/apply", is for current landlords and tenants. Its own notice says it "is not attached to the waiting list at all" and that registering there will not place an applicant on the list.
- An email address checked often, since the confirmation and later notices can come by email
- A mailing address where letters will arrive for as long as the wait lasts
- Names and details of everyone who will live in the home
- Income information for each household member, with papers to back it up
- Proof of the Boone County tie: an address, an employer or full-time school enrollment in the county
The county publishes no document list for new applicants. For transfers, its Transfers page asks for original Social Security cards, photo ID for adults, birth certificates for children and proof of income.
Watch outApplying is free. Anyone who charges a fee to apply, to hold a place in line or to promise a voucher is not the housing agency. The Federal Trade Commission's Section 8 alert says "there is no fee to register for a Section 8 waiting list."
Who can apply
A household can apply if it fits one of the four open groups, has the Boone County tie and is under the federal income limit for its size.
| Household size | Extremely low (30%) | Very low (50%) | Low (80%) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 person | $23,100 | $38,500 | $61,550 |
| 2 people | $26,400 | $44,000 | $70,350 |
| 3 people | $29,700 | $49,500 | $79,150 |
| 4 people | $33,000 | $54,950 | $87,900 |
| 5 people | $38,680 | $59,350 | $94,950 |
| 6 people | $44,360 | $63,750 | $102,000 |
| 7 people | $50,040 | $68,150 | $109,000 |
| 8 people | $55,720 | $72,550 | $116,050 |
What it means: the county does not say which column it applies. Under 24 CFR 982.201, the general voucher limit is the very low (50%) column.
Source: HUD, FY 2026 Section 8 income limits, row "Boone County", Kentucky, read October 8, 2026. The county's Who Qualifies page prints the same figures and says they "went into effect May 2026."
- Citizenshipat least one household member must be a U.S. citizen or have eligible immigration status, as explained in What Disqualifies You From Section 8?
- Single peopleonly inside an open group (pregnant, on Social Security disability, or over 50). The federal rule is in Can a Single Person Get Section 8?
- Reasons for denial the county listseviction from public housing in the last five years, money owed to any housing agency, drug-related or criminal activity in the last five years, an outstanding warrant, sex offender registration, and felony convictions.
- Already holding a voucher elsewheredo not apply. The application page says to ask the current housing agency to start a transfer. See How Section 8 Portability Works.
Federal rules let an agency keep a list open only to families meeting criteria it adopts (24 CFR 982.206). An applicant who did not live in the area when applying can also be required to lease there for the first 12 months (24 CFR 982.353).
How Boone County orders its list
Boone County's pages do not say whether the list runs by date and time or by lottery, and no administrative plan was found on the county's site.
| Question | What the county's pages say | Federal rule |
|---|---|---|
| Date order or lottery? | Not stated | Either is allowed (24 CFR 982.207) |
| Preferences? | None named | Optional (24 CFR 982.207) |
| Displaced households | The application page says to call 859-334-2105 | Not required |
| Wait time | "It's tough to know how long it will take" | None set |
| Administrative plan online? | Not found | A plan must exist (24 CFR 982.54) |
What it means: ask the office for the plan's waiting list chapter if order or preferences matter. Agencies that draw names at random are covered in How Section 8 Lotteries Work.
Source: Boone County Assisted Housing application page, FAQs and Policies page, read October 8, 2026.
Two small programs sit outside the regular list. The county says it has 30 vouchers for veterans referred through Veterans Affairs and five stability vouchers for survivors of violence referred by Kentucky Housing or the Welcome House.
What happens after you apply
After applying, the household waits for its name to reach the top, then goes through an interview and a briefing before any voucher is issued.
- At submissionan email confirmation, per the county's FAQ.
- While waitingstatus checks by phone at 859-334-2105. The county posts an "Address Update" form on its Policies page for new contact details.
- At the top of the list"an in-person interview", where the office finishes the application and works out rental assistance.
- Notices"a letter in the mail and/or an email". The FAQ says applicants are responsible for correct contact details.
- Briefingrequired before the voucher is handed over.
- Voucher termnot published by the county. The federal minimum is 60 calendar days (24 CFR 982.303).
What it means: every later step depends on the office reaching the applicant.
Source: Boone County Assisted Housing FAQs and Get Started page, read October 8, 2026; 24 CFR 982.303.
TipThe county publishes no purge or update schedule. The federal rule lets an agency remove applicants who do not answer its requests (24 CFR 982.204), so report a new address, phone or email the week it changes.
What a voucher pays in Boone County
Boone County does not publish its payment standards online, so the closest public figure is HUD's Fair Market Rent for the county.
View the data table
| Unit size | 90% of FMR | FY 2027 FMR | 110% of FMR |
|---|---|---|---|
| Studio | $947 | $1,052 | $1,157 |
| 1 bedroom | $1,015 | $1,128 | $1,241 |

| 3 bedrooms | $1,707 | $1,897 | $2,087 |
| 4 bedrooms | $1,927 | $2,141 | $2,355 |
What it means: this is the HUD benchmark and not Boone County's payment standard. Agencies generally set standards between 90% and 110% of it (24 CFR 982.503), so ask the office for its current schedule.
