MATA (Memphis Area Transit Authority) Trolley

Section 8 apartments near the MATA Main Street Line

The MATA Main Street Line runs Downtown Memphis from Court Square to the FedExForum along Main Street. Historical note: MATA trolleys were suspended in 2014 after fires; Main Street Line briefly restored 2018-2024, then suspended again after the August 2024 shutdown. As of June 2025 the line is "operating" via rubber-tired vehicles in trolley livery — not the historic streetcars. Riverfront and Madison lines remain suspended with no restoration timeline.

No source-of-income protection in effect

Memphis has a Fair Housing Ordinance that lists source of income as a protected class, BUT the ordinance has NO private right of action — only the City of Memphis Office of Fair Housing can enforce it, individual voucher-holders cannot sue. NAACP LDF's 2024 "Bad Housing Blues" report documents widespread ongoing SOI discrimination in Memphis despite the ordinance. Legal recourse for voucher-holders here is effectively minimal.
