What Housing Authority of York says
The Housing Authority of York, which calls itself York Housing or YHA, still listed its voucher list as open on October 8, 2026. Its How to Apply for Section 8 Housing page reads: "Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher: Applications are taken EVERY TUESDAY from 9 AM - 4:30 PM." The next line is "When the Section 8 waiting list closes, it will be posted here."
- Online applicationsnot available on October 8, 2026. The Apply Online page read only "Coming Soon."
- No administrative plannone was found on yorkhasc.org or in its site map, so the rules for ordering and purging the list are not published online.
- No wait time or closing dateneither is posted.
- Which Yorkthis is the agency in York County, South Carolina, part of HUD's Charlotte rent area. Housing agencies in York, Pennsylvania are separate and are not covered here.
YHA says it "administers approximately 237 Vouchers within the Western part of York County" on its Housing Choice Vouchers page. Lists close with little notice, so call first. How to check any agency is in Is Section 8 Open Right Now?
How to apply
Apply in person on a Tuesday at YHA's office, with a copy of three documents.
- 1Call firstring 803-684-6004, the number the page gives "For more information", and confirm that Tuesday intake is still running.
- 2Copy your documentsthe page says "Please bring a copy of your required documents": birth certificate, Social Security card and picture ID.
- 3Go on a Tuesdaybetween 9 AM and 4:30 PM, to 221 California Street, York, South Carolina 29745. The contact page shows the office "Closed Noon - 1:00 pm".
- 4Complete the applicationYHA does not post the form, so the questions are not known in advance. Federal rules have the agency record your name, family size, any preference, and the date and time you applied.
- 5Ask for proofthe page does not say what confirmation applicants receive. Ask before you leave, and note the date and time.
What it means: there is one intake day a week, so a missing document can cost you a week.
Source: York Housing, How to Apply for Section 8 Housing and Contact Us, read October 8, 2026; 24 CFR 982.204(b).
- A copy of your birth certificate
- A copy of your Social Security card
- A copy of a picture ID ("Driver's License or other")
- The same for other household members, if YHA asks: the Section 8 page does not say whose documents are needed, so ask when you call
- A mailing address and phone number where YHA can reach you
- Your household's income sources and amounts
Watch outApplying is free. Anyone who charges a fee to apply, to hold a place in line or to promise a voucher is not the housing authority. The Federal Trade Commission's Section 8 alert says "there is no fee to register for a Section 8 waiting list." YHA takes voucher applications at its own office, not through a paid website.
Who can apply
A household can apply if its income is at or below HUD's very low-income limit for York County, South Carolina, the federal test for a voucher.
| Household size | Very low income (50% of median) | Extremely low income (30%) |
|---|---|---|
| 1 person | $41,100 | $24,650 |
| 2 people | $47,000 | $28,200 |
| 3 people | $52,850 | $31,700 |
| 4 people | $58,700 | $35,200 |
| 5 people | $63,400 | $38,680 |
| 6 people | $68,100 | $44,360 |
| 7 people | $72,800 | $50,040 |
| 8 people | $77,500 | $55,720 |
What it means: YHA's own Income Limits page showed lower figures with no year ($34,900 for one person), so ask YHA which table it applies.
Source: HUD, FY 2026 Section 8 income limits, row "York County", South Carolina, read October 8, 2026.
- Extremely low income firstat least 75% of the families an agency admits each year must be in the 30% column (24 CFR 982.201).
- Single peopleeligible under the federal definition of family. See Can a Single Person Get Section 8?
- Citizenshipan applicant must be a citizen or a noncitizen with eligible immigration status (24 CFR 982.201); mixed families and other bars are in What Disqualifies You From Section 8?
- Living outside the areayou do not have to live in York County to apply. If neither the head of household nor spouse lived in YHA's area when applying, the family has no right to move the voucher elsewhere for 12 months unless YHA allows it (24 CFR 982.353). See How Section 8 Portability Works.
How the York list is ordered
YHA does not publish how it orders its voucher list, so only the federal framework can be stated.
| Topic | Federal rule | What YHA's site states |
|---|---|---|
| Preferences | An agency may set local preferences, and they "must be described in the PHA Administrative Plan" (982.207) | None stated for vouchers |
| Order within a preference | Date and time of application, or a random drawing (982.207) | Not stated |
| Closing the list | Allowed once the list holds enough applicants for available funding (982.206) | A closing "will be posted here" |
| Reopening | Public notice in a local newspaper, saying where and when to apply (982.206) | Not stated |
| Removing names | The plan must say when; non-response to agency letters is a permitted reason (982.204) | Not stated |
What it means: ask YHA on Tuesday whether it uses preferences and whether the list runs by date or by drawing.
Source: 24 CFR 982.204, 982.206 and 982.207; York Housing pages read October 8, 2026.
Key pointYHA's site does list preferences (elderly and disabled, working families, local families) on its public housing page. Those are for its public housing apartments, a separate program with a separate application. Nothing on the site applies them to vouchers. How random draws work elsewhere is in How Section 8 Lotteries Work.
What happens after you apply
After applying you wait until YHA reaches your name; the steps below are federal minimums, because YHA posts no timeline of its own.
- While waitingkeep your address and phone current with YHA. An agency may remove applicants who do not answer its requests for information or updates (24 CFR 982.204).
- If a disability kept you from answeringthe agency must put you back in your former place on the list (982.204).
- When selectedthe agency checks eligibility. A denial must come with written reasons and the chance to ask for an informal review (982.554).
- Briefingan oral briefing and an information packet are required when a family is selected (982.301).
- Voucher issuedthe first search period "must be at least 60 calendar days", and the agency may extend it (982.303).
What it means: these are floors every agency must meet; YHA's own deadlines will be in its letters.
Source: 24 CFR 982.301, 982.303 and 982.554, read October 8, 2026.
TipYHA's forms page includes one titled "Write it, Don't Say it". Report any change of address in writing and keep a dated copy, because a letter that never reaches you can cost you your place.
What a York voucher pays
YHA sets its maximum subsidy, the payment standard, by ZIP code, and posts the figures without an effective date.

| Bedrooms | YHA payment standard | HUD FY 2027 Small Area FMR |
|---|---|---|
| Studio | $1,067 | $1,050 |
| 1 bedroom | $1,111 | $1,090 |
| 2 bedrooms | $1,221 | $1,190 |
| 3 bedrooms | $1,507 | $1,450 |
| 4 bedrooms | $1,914 | $1,850 |
What it means: by VoucherMatch's arithmetic, YHA's posted figures sit 2% to 4% above HUD's FY 2027 rent for that ZIP code, inside the 90% to 110% range YHA says it uses.

| 29742 | $1,309 | $1,463 | $1,815 |
| 29743 | $935 | $1,067 | $1,320 |
What it means: YHA says the standard "is a limit for the GROSS RENT", meaning the rent to the landlord plus YHA's utility allowance.
Source: York Housing, Payment Standards Map, each ZIP code page, read October 8, 2026.
YHA's voucher page says participants "pay 30% of their adjusted gross income for rent." As a benchmark only, HUD's FY 2027 Fair Market Rent for the whole Charlotte-Concord-Gastonia area is $1,785 for two bedrooms (HUD FY 2027 FMRs); that is not YHA's payment standard. The metro picture is in How Much Does Section 8 Pay in Charlotte in 2026? and the national two-bedroom comparison.
