State law limits local voucher protections
Texas limits local voucher-protection ordinances, but that does not let every property refuse vouchers. TDHCA-funded or administered multifamily housing, including housing-tax-credit properties, cannot exclude applicants because they use Housing Choice Vouchers. Other program or contract requirements may also apply; ordinary screening and agency approval still matter.

Check before you pay
Applying for housing assistance or joining an agency waitlist is free. An agency will not ask you to pay by app, wire or gift card to get a spot. Use HUD’s contact page to find your housing agency, then call to check an offer.
Do not pay to view a home or hold a waitlist spot. Before sending rent or a deposit, confirm the home and the person’s right to rent it. See FTC advice on checking a rental.

Rental terms used on this page
- Housing Choice Voucher (Section 8)
- Rental help run by a housing authority. You find a home, and the agency checks the unit, rent and your household before it approves payment.
- Payment standard
- An amount the agency uses to work out housing assistance for a unit size and area. It does not mean that any home at that rent will be approved.
- FMR and SAFMR
- HUD rent estimates for an area (Fair Market Rent) or ZIP code (Small Area Fair Market Rent). They include rent and most tenant-paid utilities. Your agency may use a different payment standard.
- Utility allowance
- The agency’s estimate of the cost of utilities you must pay. It is not a promise to pay your actual bills.
- Gross rent and tenant share
- Gross rent combines the lease rent and the agency’s utility allowance. Your tenant share is the part you must pay after the agency works out your help.
- Portability
- Moving with a voucher to an area served by another housing agency. Ask your current worker what to do before you move.
- Request for tenancy approval
- The unit and owner paperwork your agency needs to start its rent and housing-quality review. Ask the agency for its form and deadline.

Planning a voucher search in Design District
For a Design District rental, ask for the residential entrance and available unit rather than navigating only to a showroom or mixed-use property name. Compare the route across major roads and the parking included in the lease. A Market Center reference does not identify a particular transit service or platform.
Identify the DART Market Center station
DART lists Market Center Station at 4301 Harry Hines Boulevard, with Green and Orange Line service. Its description places station parking across Harry Hines. Map the actual pedestrian approach and confirm the service you need rather than using the wider Market Center name alone.
DART: Market Center station and accessPlan Dallas West Library as a separate destination
Dallas West Branch Library is at 2332 Singleton Boulevard and lists study rooms and classrooms. Check the route across the river from the offered Design District address and current room availability before pairing a library errand with a showing.
Dallas Public Library: dallas west branch libraryQuestions about your Design District search
- What if a property name covers both commercial and residential space?
- Request the offered apartment’s unit number, resident door and access arrangements. Those details should match the owner’s tenancy proposal.
- Does station parking count as parking included with the rental?
- Public transit parking and a lease parking agreement have different rules. Ask the owner which space, if any, is included and confirm transit parking restrictions separately.
