Frequently asked questions

Does applying early improve my chances in a DAHLIA lottery?
No. The City's guide says a computer program randomly ranks all the applicants who applied to a listing, then moves preference holders to the top. An application sent on the first day is treated the same as one sent on the last.
Who gets preference in San Francisco housing lotteries?
In order: Certificate of Preference holders, displaced tenants, neighborhood residents, then people who live or work in San Francisco. Veterans rank first within each group. The City's guide says anyone who cannot claim a preference is ranked last.
Can I use a Section 8 voucher in a DAHLIA apartment?
Yes. DAHLIA says Section 8 vouchers and other valid rental assistance can be used for its rental listings. How the minimum income is applied to a voucher holder is set by each building's selection criteria, so read them.
How long after the lottery will I hear back?
The City's guide says a leasing agent may reach you as soon as 3 weeks or as long as a year after the lottery, in rank order. If the listing fills before your rank is reached, you are not contacted.
